The booster heater shown here has a burner that heats a helical coil in the heater. The heated coil boosts the temperature of the liquid asphalt as it flows through the coil enroute to the loading rack.
The heater raises the temperature of the asphalt from 285 degrees F to 360 degrees F (a total of 75 degrees F) as it flows through the heater at 300 gpm.
This allows the asphalt stored in large tanks to be held at temperatures somewhat lower than temperatures needed at HMA plants.
